Oftentimes the “smart people” or “engineer types” can be their own worst enemy to personal success. Dr. Boyes digs into some of the common ways of thinking that prevent success and how to shift to a new paradigm.

TLDR;

  1. Soft skills can be seen as less valuable than strong technical skills. This could not be further from the truth as working with others is integral to success.
  2. Teamwork can be a frustrating experience when working with “less intelligent” people. Keep in mind that not everyone will have the same skill set or learn as fast as you, be patient and develop an interest in helping others.
  3. Pride. Too much pride in intelligence can lead to avoiding risking anything to hurt that pride. Learn to take risks and grow from them!
  4. Getting bored is really easy when you are smart. Developing the kind of mastery necessary for professional success may require repetitive tasks.
  5. Overthinking, to the point of obsession, is an incredibly dangerous trap to fall into.
